A friend told me he was going on a diet, asked me this question, and I was at a loss. My impression is that salad dressings are the crack cocaine of foods. They're loaded with fat and sodium, and that's why people like them. Especially the more popular offerings, e.g. ranch.

Is there a genre of salad dressings that is not catastrophic, health-wise?

I prefer simple vinaigrettes ... currently I'm using a red wine vinegar and olive oil vinaigrette from Trader Joe's. I very rarely use anything creamy like ranch or bleu cheese.

really healthy ..... a squeeze of lemon and I sometimes add a few dashes of hot sauce; salt and pepper is an option too and a little olive oil wont kill ya.

Short answer: no, nothing like thousand island or ranch or whatever favorite salad dressing that's loaded in bad stuff.

To find the best dressings, you're gonna have to make your own, or try lemon juice and such, with pepper added to it to give it any kind of zip.

This.

If I want something sweet, I use a plain balsamic glaze drizzled very lightly.

You can use avocao, greek yogurt or tahini to make a healthier creamy dressing. I like vinaigrettes and typically do more vinegar than oil. I flip the traditional ratio.

Also you can mix a little shallot or onion or garlic, dijon mustard, your favorite vinegar and olive oil with salt and pepper. Very tasty and the mustard emulsifies the oil.

I also use orange juice to sweeten up dressings. You only need a bit and it is yummy in most dressings.
