There's an ice cream social coming up at work. So far we've got the following flavors for the table:

Homemade vanilla
Chocolate
Butterscotch
Salt caramel
Butter pecan
Black cherry
Pistachio

Toppings on the list:

Real whipped cream
Caramel
Sprinkles
Cardamom
Chocolate salt
Maraschino cherries

What ice cream do you like, and how do you decorate? When do you celebrate occasions width ice cream? Do have have any cherished traditions?

My favorite flavors: vanilla, chocolate, rocky road, butter pecan, mint, chocolate chip, coffee, mocha, fudge brownie, German chocolate cake, key lime pie, mint chocolate chip, green tea, Oreo, pistachio, sea salt carmel, tiramisu, strawberry.

Toppings: chocolate syrup on some flavors.

Ice cream selection is great, I would add a sherbet for those who watch the cals.
As for toppings? I never really favored any. A good ice cream don't need to be "refined". I would say, real whipped cream from a spray can, and maybe a good choco syrup is all what I would care about. Fresh fruit or berry compote is great also.
Berry compote: melt unsalted butter, lemon juice and brown sugar in a pan, add chunks of mixed fruit, and cook until berries are warm and juices begin to be released, 2 to 3 minutes, stirring gently. Serve warm over ice cream. I bet, it will be a favorite!

In my opinion - stick to the basics here. Because you’re providing all kinds of toppings, you want to avoid ice creams that have too many competing flavors or mix-ins.

For home - I have a "perpetual" rumtopf, and I serve the fruit over the ice cream. I also soak raisins in rum. They are in a jar (I take some then add some). They are soaked in rum and sugar, and syrupy.

When I was working, we always had an ice cream social at the beginning of the school year. We did not have as many flavors of ice cream, but we always had vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry.

Toppings included chocolate sauce, hot fudge sauce, cherries, wet nuts, whipped cream, and sprinkles.

We also had several types of cakes, and we did floats.

I also had a social for my students in my classes at the end of the year, and while we did a lot of the above, we also did smoothies with ice cream.

+1. Sundaes turn good ice cream with distinctive flavors into sweetened glop. Really, all I sense in a sundae are sweetness and coldness. My favorite ice cream of all is Haagen-Dazs' Pralines & Cream, which they are suddenly making again. I also favor Talenti's Caramel Cookie Crunch and Southern Butter Pecan.

I like my ice cream plain except vanilla with hot melted chocolate, or warm homemade blueberry or raspberry/strawberry compote and a shot of Schnapps.
