It is said that The Buddha refused to eat any food that had been prepared for him, choosing instead to nourish himself only with what had been discarded or left uneaten by others.
I save all cut off portions of veggies for stocks..like carrot tops and bottoms, broccoli stalks, celery "butts" even onion ends. It all goes in together in a freezer container and I add to stocks and then freeze in ice cube trays.
I'm teaching my daughters to take only what they can eat on their plates and if they are still hungry they can go back to the stove or oven for 2nds. DH and I eat leftovers for lunch or on Refrigerator Roulette Night I warm up all the little drips and drabs of leftovers in the fridge and we have a Buffet. Sometimes it's no more than a bite or two but nobody seems to mind that. I'll add rice or nice salad to complete the meal.
And guess what? Not every dinner has to have a protein. A meatless or even cheeseless dinner won't kill anybody. We are coming up on my favorite season--bountiful fruits and veggies. We eat a lot of salads and raw veggies in the summer and cut way back on meats.

I feed all healthy scraps and leftovers to my dog. Only healthy whole foods that are good for her. Saves on dog food, and provides a fresh, human grade diet for her that is packed full of nutrients and fresh live food. Anything healthy that might go bad in the fridge also goes to the dog. This is in addition to her regular food of course. Saves a lot of cash buying less grain free high end food when she finishes off our scraps.
When I lived on a hobby farm, scraps went outside to the rabbits and hens who ate them and recycled them into meat and eggs. Once again, saving on feed.

Me And my buddy were walking down the street one day, we say this dog all licking it's junk. . . my buddy says to me, "Man, I WISH I could do that"! I said, you might wanna try just petting him first!
Actually, they were doing it in the United States in their National Supermarket chain in St. Louis. The problem was ... they did not market it as such. Loblaws did such a poor job in the US.
