We have a vegetarian in the house, so I try to make dishes that can be prepared with or without meat. I find that a lot of chicken dishes can easily go without meat and still taste good.
Going to start putting meals on a rotation so we can stock up for the hot summer. Try to keep the red meat consumption low. Don't know if it's because I'm brainwashed or because it really is dangerous to eat red meat too often.
Wondering what the average out there is for red meat consumption and how do you prepare it? Right now we are at two to three times a month, but with the meal rotation it will likely go up to one to three times a week some times. I will be preparing and freezing things like taco meat, spaghetti meat sauce, hamburgers, Asian broccoli and beef, beef stew.
Prices are skyrocketing, so as part of my adjustment, I rarely consume red meat and it has to be as close to organic as I can afford. So, I'd say several times a year and I have a pot of spaghetti made, too. Some will be frozen. I used to consume beef probably almost every day when I worked. I'm not worried about my blood counts because they've always been fine, despite the way I ate .
I eat a small amount of beef once or twice a week, probably 5-6 oz. total. My family eats more meat than I do. Itr's not about money or health, I just truly like other things (vegetables, legumes, grains) better than meat.
Honestly, I eat the amount of red meat I do primarily because of a medical condition that is greatly relieved when I increase my red meat intake.
That said, we eat a varied diet, and my husband generally avoids a heavily red meat diet...occasional steaks and beef brisket barbecue, but most of his meals don't involve red meat. It means that much of the time, we are each eating a different protein source at a given meal.
We do use a fair amount of turkey in place of ground beef, but really only in instances where it's going to be heavily seasoned, paired with a lot of other ingredients, and the differences between ground beef and ground turkey are less noticeable. Most of the chili I make, for instance, uses browned ground turkey if it's not vegetarian.
Usually twice a week, either lamb or beef. If you count pork make it three times a week. Usually in 4-6 oz. portions. I don't eat any meat for breakfast or lunch, so that's pretty much my entire meat intake for the day.
How much is healthy is going to vary from person to person, and your doctor is really the only person who can tell you what is a healthy amount for you to eat. A varied diet of fresh foods with everything in moderation is good general rule to follow.
I'm not sure red meat is killing people, either. I think the correlation between red meat and heart disease has a lot to do with the fact that many people with the worst diets and lifestyles, smokers/sedentary, probably eat a lot more red meat in the form of sodium laden fast food burgers. A far cry from an active person who eats a nice home-prepared steak with a heap of roasted vegetables a few times a week.
That said, beef production is very resource intensive and has a huge impact on the environment compared to other meats, which for me is as good a reason as any to self limit. Besides, I think a healthy meat-eaters profile should be balanced between red meat, white, meat, fish, and organ meats. With that balanced, having red meat 2-3 meals per week is about right.
Beef a couple of times a week usually in a stirfry
Chicken a couple of times a week usually roasted
Fish on Fridays usually pan fried filets
some of our meals have no meat at all.
Some times i experiment, today for lunch i'm trying fried Spam slices that will be added to a sub with tomato lettuce sweet pickles and a little mayo.
I'm hoping it comes out something like this only in a sub version. http://www.livingwithjuvenilearthrit...2/Spam-Can.jpg
