The long line for Shake Shack can spoil the meal & I've found that some of them are better than others, eg., the Times Square one overcooks the burger, if I just went there I wouldn't get the reputation, but the one in the park is great.
Can't honestly comment on I&O, been too long, but 5 Guys... while the burgers are just ok their fries are fantastic, much better than any of the fast food places.

5 Guys the beef is way too spongee and dry except for the amount of grease they add by using that water bottle to rehydrate the meat. I've had 5 Guys almost a dozen times with co-workers and if it wasn't for the fries I got pretty sick of their dried burger patties.
I think we can just chalk up these "burger wars" to regional preferences. Most of the Five Guys people prefer that because they probably grew up on Five Guys and/or they are what they have always eaten regularly. Same with In-N-Out. As a native Southern Californian (Los Angeles) I will always prefer In-N-Out burger over everyone elses. Everyone I know prefers IN-N-Out over Five Guys. Its almost like a joke with many of my friends here. When we travel, first thing we always do when coming home is visit an In-N-Out burger after leaving the airport. It just says "Welcome Home".
Battle of the titans. Which one is better in your opinion?
The comparison isn't straight up.
For example:
Strictly regarding the product, Five Guys is slightly better than In-N-Out - at about twice the price.
It's easy to be very good when you're throwing a lot of money at something (and thus charging the customer a lot in order to turn a profit). But dollar for dollar, In-N-Out smokes Five Guys.
I gave in and went to Burger King today because I had a buy-one-get-one-free coupon for Whoppers.
Burger King seems to be having a contest with itself to see how thin they can make their burger patties before it evaporates completely.
