As soon as I run out of this tub of canola/olive/grape seed oil I got at BJs, I'm going to switch over entirely to peanut oil even though it's expensive. It's the only vegetable oil I think has an ok flavor when frying. Avocado, coconut oil, even olive oil, terrible.
How times have changed. My mother had a stone crock of bacon grease with a spoon in it, on the stove. It was used for everything stove top, and after frying, it was poured back into the crock. When I left to go to college, that bacon grease was at least 25 years old. (For baking, she used Crisco shortening). She and my dad both lived to mid-90s and died in their sleep after going upstairs to bed..
I don't use olive oil for frying. I use extra virgin olive oil on salads, cheeses, etc., since the flavor is important.
I use grape seed oil as my default cooking oil, & peanut oil for deep frying. I used to use canola, but to me, it tends to develop an off taste.
I use sesame oil in very small amounts for flavoring, & use walnut oil in the same way.
I rarely cook with coconut oil, but I use it occasionally when the flavor won't clash with the dish. I use it primarily to moisturize my french bulldog's nose He likes it.

Yup, I find a difference.
My morning smile cause I often think about how we ate so many years ago. The truely younger people here, those under 50 just can't imagine.
Yes, we had the bacon greese can in the fridge as well. We did use Crisco shortening and we used salad oil for salads. It wasn't peanut, Sunflower, Olive, Canola or anything. It was just salad oil and yes, our family lived to be in their 90s.
Today, I sill do have that bacon grease container in the fridge, but use it rarely, certainly not like my parents and in laws. I use OOil most of the time, peanut it I want a hot grease and I keep a large container of plain old wesson oil for things that I do not want to use peanut oil for and don't want the Ooil flavor. I am about ready to start trying coconut oil. Oh, and I love sesame seed oil for flavor but it is way out of my budget to use often. I normally just reserve it for Asian cooking.
