Not much for salt here either. Rarely use it. Pepper, well that's my go-to. Favorite is the grind peppercorn. Also sometimes will include the Old Thompson lemon orange grind pepper.
Due to my blood pressure, I'm supposed to avoid salt and for the most part, I do. However, once in awhile, I slip up and cook with it anyway.
I'm gonna try harder to give it up entirely because it's not worth the headache that I sometimes get afterwards due to my blood pressure going up as a result. Sometimes it takes a day or more for that headache to fully go away.
When I was a kid I used to salt everything before I even tasted it - my Mom would get on my case about it big time. Now I put garlic powder on everything that would need salt. The only exception is baked potatoes, whether they're white or sweet. Even though I still shake on the garlic powder, I need the teensiest bit of salt to bring out the potato flavor.
I salt everything while cooking, I do not use large amounts anymore. Just enough to add a bit of flavor.
On my plate I only salt meat and potato's, never veggies I use an obscene amount of black pepper though..
Some years ago I cut back on salt thinking to keep my blood pressure low. After a while everything tasted salty enough to me so I assumed I was getting plenty of salt in my diet.
But eventually I saw the doctor complaining of frequent fatigue and when she heard how little salt I was eating she said to go home and eat some bacon and eggs!
I answered her, "I'll bet you don't have to tell that to very many of your patients."
Guess as usual it's, "moderation in all things."
I do love a nice tart apple with salt. When I was a kid and the neighbors didn't mind us helping ourselves to their apple trees I carried a salt shaker around in my pocket.
I use light to no salt in a lot of my cooking, but I agree that some things definitely taste better salted. If I am cooking with broth, I'll omit adding salt, but if you eat a lot of raw/unprocessed food you might need some salt anyway.
I love salt....but have to really watch it...hubby is on "low salt"...so I've cut back quite a bit....takes some getting used to! Some things just MUST have salt added when cooking...as salting at the table just doesn't cut it!
I use an average amount of salt in cooking. I rarely salt things after cooking. Popcorn, raw foods, I usually season...sometimes with salt, sometimes not. Seasoning food isn't something I shy away from.
