We're having grilled lamb chops tomorrow. We always rub them with a slightly wet rub of rosemary, garlic, olive oil, salt & pepper.
I bought some sweet potatoes and thought I'd serve them along with the lamb. A recipe I found calls for -- you guessed it -- a rub of rosemary, garlic, olive oil, salt & pepper on the potatoes, cut in wedges.
Is it a good idea to have the same seasonings on the main dish and a side? I'm often reluctant to add a whole other set of flavors to a meal. But is it too much of a good thing to have the same seasoning on both main elements? We'll probably have asparagus and a green salad, too, but they're not the main attractions.
Side dishes should compliment the main dish.
Too much rosemary.
Do new potatoes with butter, dill, sea salt, and cracked pepper.
I would say a vegetable with a citrus-y dressing would complement the rosemary lamb chops well. Green beans with lemon zest (and oil and garlic to tie it together). Broccoli with an orange sauce. Something like that. I wouldn't do the exact same flavorings on a main and a side, no. But a citrus flavoring would be a good counterpoint.
Thanks, all. Decided to have grilled corn-on-the-cob as the starch and save the potatoes for another day. Some great ideas for them here -- I really appreciate it!
So now, a day after the lamb and corn, I thought I'd report back that I did fix the sweet potatoes with the rosemary/garlic rub tonight, and they were delicious! I thought I didn't care for sweet potatoes much, so we have them at Thanksgiving and then again at . . . Thanksgiving.
But MIL is visiting, she said she likes sweet potatoes, so I found this recipe: Sweet Potatoes Roasted With Garlic And Rosemary Recipe - Food.com. Wow, they were delicious! Yet another veggie to add to my regular repertoire, along with Brussels sprouts which I learned to love about two years ago after 60 years of avoiding them!

Lamb chops with sweet potatoes sounds really tasty if potatoes aren't rubbed with rosemary and garlic. A simple flash fry will compliment the dish nicely, since the lamb chops will be the shining star, and sweet potato fries can balance the saltiness and garlicy flavor of the chops pretty well with its earthy sweet flavor.

To me it depends on what you are fixing and what seasonings you plan on usuing. It is fine to mix seasonngs as long as they blend together. If the recipe you are talking about calls for the same seasonings I would use them, skipping the rosemary with the sweet potatoes and add something a little on the sweet side to your salad. Maybe a Waldorf salad or a fruit salad, would mix well. You really don't need a green salad if you are doing asparagus. Or if you want a green salad why not add something sweet to it like cransens, strawberries, etc.

It really is all in how you cook 'em, isn't it??

And yes, it's great to find new veggies to love. I think that almost any vegetable tastes good roasted, and the seasonings just increase the variety but good old salt and pepper works well too.
