Yeah 40 million is lots of chickens.





Washington (AFP) - US farmers have been forced to kill almost 40 million chickens and other birds, causing egg prices to soar as a deadly version of the avian flu attacks the poultry industry.

40 million chickens,,,,,,thats a lot of eggs or nuggets



8.6 billion chickens were processed in 2013 in the u.s.

maybe we'll see these chickens on a dollar menu soon, McAvianflu nuggets, 12 for a dollar!

Seems like a drop in the bucket when you see the total # processed in a year. Just a shame to see so many destroyed. Better than having to destroy them all. If it was McD's advertising 12 nuggets or so for a dollar I'm gonna pass. Those prices likely reflect the country of origin.

speaking of country of origin laws,,,,

it looks like they just revoked cool laws.....

if you read why Canada and mexico was putting huge pressure on the wto to revoke the laws(the u.s.)...or as Canada said,,they would retaliate in other commodities..
its not china driving this

The WTO is not our friend. I don't keep up with the politics...just trying to avoid products I don't trust. Canada and Mexico are overly concerned I think.

I haven't had to buy eggs for awhile, so I don't know.

I do know we have a coo-pun (think Ron White) from Kroger for a free dozen and we will take advantage of that, while the taking is good

I pay on average $2.89 pet dozen, $4 for a carton of egg whites.

I paid $2.50 for a dozen cage-free brown eggs this week at a specialty market. A dozen regular white eggs was $2.69 the same day a Kroger.

I've heard the price increases are due to the Avian flu in Iowa and the California law that went into effect this year requiring chickens have room to spread their wings.
