Red Delicious has always been my favorite. But I agree the quality has declined over the past decades. It's a shame about the texture, but I still like the flavor. I have recently discovered that I like Jazz, but they're not always available here in the mid-Atlantic.
I'm surprised at the number of comments about mealy red delicious apples. All this time I thought they were mealy because they had been in cold storage too long-I didn't realize it was a characteristic of the apple- on the other hand- I've had red delicious that weren't mealy- how do you account for that?

Could be a variety of things...older trees...and I am talking old...tend not to have firmer fruit than newer more selectively cultivated ones. Storage can come into play as well . Tempatute and weather during to growth season....there are tons a variables.
However it's safe to say it's easier to get a mealy one than not.
The red delicious off my own tree are wonderful. They are picked at the right time, plus they are not a variety of red delicious specially bred for nice red color.
The best red delicious are streaky colored and on the small side The original red delicious was stripped. There are hundreds of varieties of red delicious and some are a lot better than others.
Along come the plant breeders who know that the consumer prefers to buy red apples and they want the biggest apples. The race is on to breed the reddest apple of them all. Along the way, they lost flavor and texture. The skin was bred tougher to make the apple ship better. The apples were bred bigger because that's what the consumer wanted to buy.
Net result, they turned the red delicious from a great apple into a loser.

I suspected the newer variety is overbred, picked too soon, and stored too long. Red Delicious used to be THE standard. When I was a kid there were three types of apples: Reds, Goldens, and Grannys.
