I must be in the minority, I actually like red delicious. I prefer the slightly "mealy" texture to the crispness of the others. But most of all I like the sweetness over any that are tart. I can't stand the sour/tart taste in any others I've tried. Even with the red delicious, some are tart and some are sweet, it's just luck of the draw.
It's expensive but it spoiled us for the rest of the apples. I just buy a bag of pink ladies at Aldi's for the most part with honey crisp here and there.
LOL! I DO use Aldi's for fruit and produce and occasional dairy! Same reason! I hate paying almost $1.per apple or any kind....it's an apple for gosh sakes!
I like the red delicious if they are just picked and firm....same for Gala. The Fuji is fantastic just picked and is better for the entire rest of the year.
From what I understand they were made to be like they are (Fuji)...slow to brown, stay crispy, etc. It scares me on the GMO train of thought, but they are good!
They had these weird grape flavored apples once. I think they inject it with grape flavoring? It was bizarre but the kids enjoyed it. lol Also had cotton candy flavored grapes. Those were also interesting.
Just got a bag of pink ladies while at the store and picked out a few different ones offered. Going to try them all over the next week and see if I like any others.
While Red Delicious is a great looking apple that great look doesnt transfer to its taste.Cortlands , Macintoshes and Spartans seem to be our usual varieties and usually come in a 10lb variety bag at the grocery store.,
We used to have these apples in our school lunches from home. They were tasty back then but now are too mealy and blah tasting. I now prefer Honeycrisp, Johmagolds and Fujis. Our neighbor has an orchard of them so we get them for free in the early fall. We tried growing them and the trees do well for a few years but we had a bad cold snap that hit fiercely where they were planted. We should try again in a different area as the neighbor sold his house recently.
I am a person that I will try it once. And these were once for me. lol
