I cannot imaging a scenario where I would need to wait more than a minute or two at the most. I like my food hot, or at least warm. A 40-minute old baked potato isn't even going to melt butter. I feel sure that the OP is waiting way too long and irritating everyone who goes to dinner with him. In 40 minutes from the time the food arrives, I'm finished eating and paying the check, In fact, I doubt that he really does this - maybe this is just a discussion starter.

If you do it properly, it's considerably (by orders of magnitude) less conspicuous than putting ice in a bowl of soup or sitting there doing nothing when you've got a plate of food in front of you!

You're not spraying your soup across the table, just gently blowing on it. Its much better then fishing ice cubes out of your drink and plopping them into your food.
How many degrees is your damned soup served at that it would seriously need to sit for 30-40 minutes to be safe to comfortably consume?
We're not talking lava or bubbling tar, here. Liquids of the sort that soup is generally made from, removed from heat sources, cool fairly quickly.
