Oh, why did I look? It was in a novel, a luxury meal that included Charlotte Malakoff.

What's Charlotte Malakoof, I says to myself. Darn Google anyway. I've seen it and now I must make one.

No, Oregon, scratch my earlier comment. You DO have to make an English trifle. I've only had it two or three times but, oh my god, they were two or three of the most fabulous eating experiences of my life.

PS. Please let me know when it's ready.
PPS. I'll bring my own spoon.

That was my first reaction, too. lol

And then I saw what Dirt Grinder wrote, and then that was my second reaction, too. I used to work with a guy who came here from England. The higher-ups decided it would be good morale for us to have regular barbecues with all of us bringing in a dish. This guy brought in a trifle. Omg, I couldn't get over how good it was. He was like, "What, you've never had trifle before?" Uh, no!!!! I had never even heard of it before.

I tried making a version once, but it was a paltry substitute, it didn't even come close to comparing.

I do hope we'll see a photo of the Charlotte Malakoff in this thread.

Try to find the Julia Child episode of "The French Chef" (Season 3 - Episode 10) where she makes a Charlotte Malakoff - it's a riot.

It's so pretty! Sort of like Charlotte Russe, but with a different filling, I guess?

According to Charlotte Russe Cake History, Charlotte Malakoff, Apple Charlotte, Whats Cooking America Charlotte Malakoff is one variation of the original, the Charlotte Russe.

I've made trifle many times. That's my go-to dessert for pot lucks and nice dinners. Cake is easier to make than lady fingers.

I used to make trifle in a tall crystal bowl where it looked so pretty with the layers showing. The second time I caught someone whacking the spoon hard against the rim of the bowl to dislodge cream, I stopped using that bowl for the public. You just can't depend on people using any common sense.
