My in laws will leave butter out at room temperature all day long, sometimes overnight. I am always paranoid about using it or giving it to my kids. Of course Google says you should always keep it refrigerated, but nobody has ever gotten sick from my in laws' room temperature butter.....their creamy, soft, never rips your toast to shreds room temperature butter.
Does anyone else leave their butter out too?
why would you be paranoid? We freeze ours when we buy a bunch on sale; take it out by the lb, put it in the fridge, take it out by the cube put it on a butter dish and leave it in the cupboard unless it is summer, then we have to keep it in the fridge most of the time.
I've never stored butter anywhere but the fridge. I had a roommate once who was a leaver-outer, and this (and the thermostat) was a huge bone of contention. I know people do it, but to me dairy=refrigeration.
not only butter but eggs, olives, ketchup and mustard all sit on the counter waiting to be used. I have had butter go rancid once in my entire life. You CAN leave pickles out also but I like mine cold.
In really hot days it is in the fridge as do not oily butter. In the winter sometimes have to zap it to use it as it gets very cold in the cupboard. It is usually between a quarter and a third of a pound (or a454g block) that gets into the butter dish.
We were taught not to leave it on the counter though as the cats got into it and then knocked the dish down onto the floor where the dogs finished it off. No fear of that happening now that they are all gone.
I used to refrigerate it and it got that refrigerator taste.
Now, I freeze the unused sticks and leave a stick out on the counter. I have been using counter-top butter for several years now.
Thanks for all the comments, everyone. I think I will start leaving it out on those occasions where we expect to be using it a lot. And, as some suggested, a few pats in a small butter dish.
I do have to be careful of the dog, though. She knocks almost anything off the counters if she can get it......and she can get to a lot.
