My family doesn't eat farmed fish because the flavor is inferior to wild caught, but I don't worry about GMO foods. If they can grow lots of tons of fish protein in a short time period and sell it for cheaper, more power to them.
I eat farmed salmon regularly and appreciate its availability and reasonable price. I don't find the flavor any different but then I'm not eating it plain.
My concern with farmed fish and shrimp is the antibiotics used. They make us resistant to them when we actually need them. I do love salmon and wild caught is never fresh where I live and is quite expensive. It is usually $12+ per pound, previously frozen from Alaska. I still buy the Atlantic farmed version but just not as much as I used to.
I actually prefer farmed salmon because it is fattier and tender. All the sockeye salmon I've cooked dries out too much. Anyways yes if they can create a decent tasting fish that is cheaper, great. I'm all for having cheaper animal protein.
I tell my meat grocers whenever they are near me and the fish...
"I will never purchase anything farm-raised..just sayin...for what it's worth."
I figure 'let my voice be heard'. Why not.
I am different...because I SAW the 20/20 extensive report on (even USA)
farm-raised anything.
Even up in the clean Northwest...where they fence in the fish in moving water...
nope...there are still problems.
I WISH it could be done well...you think I WANT to spend $17 a pound for salmon?
I don't ... but farmed fish or fish from any other country will not go into this body.
I've seen too much. I bought farm-raised salmon before I saw these 2 shows.
(one was on PBS)
Wild-caught is it. Or I won't eat fish, so nope, I wont get 'used to it', with respect. I already don't eat GMO, hormone, pesticided meats and grains in many forms...chips, crackers, breads, cereals, flours....you name it...GMOed.
I was never like this, mind you....I'm too educated now....it was neat to buy cheaper meats when I didn't know!
And don't get me started on vegetable oils! Look up the toxins emitted!!
(Olive and coconut are not vegetables)
