Liked Spam as a child. Still have it occasionally. We eat the plain Spam & Bacon Spam. Sliced somewhat thin, fried crisp on a sandwich, we have it with soup. Sometimes with eggs & a biscuit. We also, from time to time, will have potted meat. But it MUST be the Armour brand! Hubby has it mixed with scrambled egg on a sandwich. I love it on crackers. We do not eat them regularly but often enough that the pantry is never without. We are both 65. The Spam & potted meat have not killed us yet.....gotta' die of something.
I regard spam as an emergency food not a regular staple, because the salt content is very high, and more importantly since it has been discovered that some companies will use the slime from meat processing, there is no knowing what all is in it.
I have spam in my long term storage ,but it is reserved only for desperate events .
I love the taste and all, but discipline and health is more important than convenience.
Actually, there is a way to know what is in it. The ingredients list. The pink slime thing is used in ground beef products, not Spam.
Spam contains pork shoulder, ham, salt, water, potato starch, sugar (cane, not HFCS), and sodium nitrite.
Except for the excessive salt and nitrites, it is probably one of the more 'pure' and honest ingredient lists in the world of processed foods. I am more afraid of an Oreo cookie than I am of the Spam.
I like spam. I've eaten it since childhood and never really got tired of it. I usually slice it then fry it in a skillet. I like eating spam for breakfast with a small side of rice and a fried egg. Yum!
I'll eat it, but I don't love it. To me, it's the other thing on the plate with the eggs. It's very salty.
