I realize that "sell by" dates seem to be a rough guide to help decide when it's wise to consume food, and when it needs to be tossed out, and that foods can be consumed for a time after its sell by date, but that's often vague.
My specific question (excuse the "word problem" format ):
1. I bought meat loaf from the prepared foods deli section of a local supermarket around the beginning of December.
2. The meat loaf was packaged in a plastic container with clear cellophane (I believe that's what it's called) wrapping that completely sealed the container.
3. The "sell by" date said December 6, 2015.
4. Two days ago (December 5, 2015), I realized that was only one day away and put the meatloaf (in its sealed container) in the freezer.
5. Today (December 7, 2015), I took it out of the freezer so it can thaw out overnight.
My question:
Will it be safe to eat this through Thursday (December 10th)? Or if not, when?
Yep, I'd eat it. Years ago, I read an article which told me that direct heat killed some of the nasties. Hack off some of the meatloaf and fry it in a pan.
My former husband had a dog's stomach. He'd eat things which I'd left on the counter for a little while when I was cleaning out the fridge. You ate that? Yes, he did. He never got sick, either.
The meatloaf should be fine, but if you have any doubts, do not eat it. I have a rule that if I have to second guess myself about anything in my fridge or freezer, it goes into the trash.
Normally as long as food is frozen, and not thawed out and frozen again it's fine to eat. If it's been a long time the problem can be the taste will change from freezer burn.
Yes....it's fine. The "sell by" date has nothing to do with the "eat by" date if it's been frozen! Especially, since it's only been frozen for a couple days! You're fine! Cook to an internal temp. of 170.
