I've been buying canned Yams/sweet potatoes at the supermarket for awhile now and the cans actually say 'Yams' and 'Sweet Potatoes' too. So until just now I thought they were the same thing until reading that orange sweet potatoes are more healthy than yams and that they are indeed different. Please help clear up this confusion. Thanks!
Anyhow, it appears these cans I've been getting at the supermarket are in fact Sweet Potatoes and not yams. From the articles I've read is Sweet Potatoes are more healthy so glad to hear that since I eat them almost every day. If anyone knows different please Lmk.

I think most of what we encounter in the US are sweet potatoes. Apparently they can call them yams on the can as long as the words "sweet potato" also appear somewhere on the can. There are different varieties of sweet potato, just to make it more confusing.
At the market last week, they had a bin of "sweet potatoes" and a bin of "yams"
The yams were darker orange in color
Roasted them both up. Couldn't tell a difference in taste between the two at all.
Don't buy the canned ones! I used to buy them...but it is so easy to bake fresh ones, let them cool, and use them instead of canned. It really doesn't take a lot of work, just a little extra time.
I don't know the difference between the two. They taste the same to me. But when I was buying them in the can I always bought Bruce's yams.
I looked and looked for information regarding the difference between yams and sweet potatoes, everything I read indicated that any potato labeled as yam, or sweet potato, is a sweet potato, and that yams are not commercially cultivated in North America. Yams are native to the African continent and apparently have not been established as a commercial crop in the U.S.A.There are also many, many different varieties of sweet potato, evidently.
What I do know for absolute fact, is that I love to eat them fresh cooked, regardless of the label.
