Only vodka or rum? What about red wine or other wines?
Vodka provides a very clean vanilla flavor. The rum comes through, which can be nice in some applications. Other options are bourbon and brandy. It's just a matter of preference.

That true....for drinks and some chocolate desserts I tend to use a rum or bourbon based extract....for lighter baked goods...vodka.
I make my own most of the time so it's easy to keep different ones on hand.
Be sure to buy quality Vanilla Extract and not Imitation Vanilla Flavoring! The good/real stuff is more expensive but it is worth every cent.
I'm very lucky that my cousin makes it at home and sells/gives it to friends and family. It's surprisingly simple to make. You just take tow vanilla beans and split them in half. Drop them into a bottle of quality vodka (don't buy the cheap stuff, at least spring for Stoli or go all out and buy Grey Goose) and put it into a dark, cool space for 4-6 months, shaking it every 2-3 weeks. .
Make your own. Split open a couple of beans, and scrape out the seeds. Put everything, seeds and beans into a cup of vodka or rum, and put it in a dark cabinet. Every couple of days, gently shake the bottle to stir up the contents. The flavor will grow more intense over time. It's heavenly stuff, and once you've tasted it, you'll never want to use a commercial brand again.
^^^ I did this with bourbon. It's maturing very nicely Vanilla is one of the best flavors in the world, in my opinion. I am always on the look out for a new vanilla extract and hoard my expensive stuff like a pirate with a chest of jewels. Imitation vanilla should be banned
No kidding. Wine is NOT a base for vanilla extract!! That's just....awful to even think about.
I use Svedka vodka. It's a good quality, and its reasonably priced.
I agree you don't need to use Stolli or Grey Goose...that is overkill. A decent mid range vodka is preferable.
