I use them occasionally and have no problem using MSG.

The myth will eventually be relegated to history along with the no fat and no gluten "trends".

Given the slant of the customers he profiles in his catalog/magazine, I'm assuming that my politics are not unlike that of Bill Penzey's, so I can't say that aspect really bothers me at all. But I do tend to order from Milwaukee's Spice House over Penzeys (it's the Penzey parents' original business, and is owned and run by Bill's sister, Patty Penzey Erd, and her husband. Evidently, there was a family schism, with Patty taking over the family business and Bill running a competing (and originally, mail-order only) company. I tend to like Spice House's selection better, and their stores, though only in Milwaukee and Chicago, are far more charming. Now that I don't live in that area, but do live near a Penzeys store, I'll run in to Penzeys in a pinch versus order from Spice House.

I don't really care for adobo seasoning, from any brand (even Penzeys). My husband loves it, and uses it a lot, but it's not my pick.

I agree with the moratorium on spice buying. I use a lot of spice now that I cook every day BUT other than black pepper, I have committed to NOT buying spice this year until the volume of spice is about halved. When I resume next year, about 90% of my spices will be coming from Winco Foods as they are ridiculously inexpensive and just as good as what I have been using.

I think that I was probably the first to complain about the Penzey catalog being political perhaps three years ago on City-Data. Personally, I am of the belief that political opinions are like a certain part of the anatomy, everyone has one. However, his ad hominem attack on Scott Walker is an e-mail that I received last year was very unprofessional and I resent ANYONE who abuses my e-mail by sending me something thing unrelated to why I gave them my e-mail.. I have moved my business to the Spice House, Winco Foods, and the Santa Cruz Chili Company.

As for adobo seasoning, I think that every Hispanic group as their recipe for adobo as do the Filipinos. I can really understand why MANY do not like Goya Adobo as that is more geared toward Caribbean/Cuban tastes and is not that similar to what you find in many Mexican supermnercados. Goya is NOT a popular brand in Arizona supermarkets.

Almost all Goya products are full of awful artificial colours and nasty additives. The single ingredient products like the tins if beans are the only ones you can really buy.

Penzey's sounds like and awesome company, thanks for the tip!

It is true that MSG is not worse than bacon or celery salt, so I bought some, used it three times and got a massive headache each time. It may not be true for everyone, but it is for me. As a result I'm more cautious eating high-glutamate foods.

That is interesting. Yes, my Cuban friends use Goya. I prefer those flavors to Mexican, too. It might be an East coast thing. We were later than other parts of the country with both the influx of Mexican immigrants and the popularity of the food.
