I like Campari tomatoes the best out of anything the grocery stores carry, and around here they sell for $1.99 lb. Nothing will ever beat farm fresh from NJ though.

I thought this was an interesting read:

Farm fresh from Arkansas or any other farm fresh from any state might beat it.

Look for heirloom tomatoes, and steak tomatoes. Both are the best at supermarket. Other than that: Farmers market, co-op markets or home grown.

A few years back my grocery was stocking something called Ugly tomatoes and it was offseason. They were ugly but they were delicious. Never saw them again. Apparently there is some tomato Mount Olympus that decided if a tomato doesn't look a certain way it cannot be exported. So unless you live in Florida you cannot find them. Oh well. At least I was able to try them once. Ridiculous!

I usually stick with cherry or grape tomatoes in the winter, because they tend to taste good. Sam's Club has a tub of mixed heirloom, yellow and red, cherry tomatoes that are super delicious, so I buy that a lot.

Tastee Lee tomatoes, from Florida, are usually pretty good.

Campari tomatoes or grape tomatoes. Until ours from the garden are ripe!

We have gotten some pretty darn good fresh tomatoes from our local grocery stores here in AR when they are in season. they come from our local farmers. Of course I love to get them at the farmers market or grow my own when I can. They really are pretty easy to grow.

OP, I don't think there is such a thing as a really good fresh tomato in the winter: maybe in Florida. Otherwise they are pretty much all green house grown. I do think the ones on the vine are the best.

can't rep gentlearts again for now, but yes, the mixed colored grape tomatoes at Sam's (year around) are as good as winter tomatoes get in my opinion.

It's so easy to grow your own! You don't need a "garden". Just use containers, out on the patio. No muss, no fuss. Just as easy as growing flowers, only better-tasting!

I used to think the ones on the vine were best. Then, I tried the Compari's. They also don't seem to spoil as quickly as some other varieties.

Cherry/grape and Campari for me as well until local tomatoes are in season. The rest of them taste like plastic. The last on-the-vine tomatoes I bought also tasted like plastic. I don't see how the stores make profit on tomatoes that taste like plastic.
