Huh? That would be more confusing than anything. If he didn't like sandwiches, why would he be in Subway? What is he expecting?
I can understand why he come in: his son, obviously enjoys Subs. I can't understand anyone being snarky. As mom used to say: "be nice" or as I tell spoiled brat; "tone" ?
I have a customer who comes into my subway with his teenage son about once a week. His son gets a sandwich but the dad does not. First time they came in the father asked me for a side of pickles. I gladly gave him a few in portion cup. I then asked what he would like and he said in a rather snarky tone "I don't like sandwiches or cold food" I like my food hot. How do you feel about it?
Subway toasts sandwiches. Of course no American ever actually gets the meat inside warm, so you have to have a veggie one, and you have to fight to get them to include all the fillings when they toast it. But you can get a hot sandwich at subway.

I don't often have a hot sandwich....I'll heat it if I want, but rarely do I buy it.
I think he probably thought you were giving him snark for not ordering a sandwich / asking for free pickles.
That said, my standard Tubby's order still rolls off my tongue, "foot long Famous COLD, dressing and mild peppers on the side." And if they're still looking at me quizzically I add, "Unheated."
I prefer cold sandwiches. I used to work at a restaurant that served cuban sandwiches and I always requested mine cold. The Cuban manager thought I was crazy but the Mexican cooks were nonplussed.
On the ther hand, meatball wedges and bahn mi I prefer hot.

Well of course I like the father because he likes pickles. I like both cold and hot sandwiches. I am pretty easy to please in that regard.
