The grocery stores in my town were closed partially or totally for Christmas Day.

There were smaller convenience stores open. Most of those stores are run by Indians or others of ethnic origins that do not celebrate Christmas.

lots of odd old laws..

Many "blue laws" were struck down in the 1970s and 1980s as there was a religious component to many of them in the southern state.

As for retail employees getting "paid more for the holidays", that has NOT been the experience of the six family members who work in grocery and department stores on Christmas and Thanksgiving.

About the ONLY employees who make more on the holidays are tipped employees as MOST people nearly double their tipping on the holiday.
