obviously its because new york city has the best pizza (its where it was invented).
disregard any poll from yelp or trip adviser that say otherwise.

just think about it; it would be impossible for any other city to have pizza as good as or better than n.y.c.

As far as places that bill themselves as NY style pizza...sure I have been to a few that taste like NY pizza. In fact there is one I go to occasionally in DFW area. However, most don't taste like the real deal. This isn't a phenomena restricted to NY Pizza. You leave the geographic area of a famous dishes origin and you have trouble finding ones that taste the same. Napoli Pizza, Italian food in general, Chinese food, Texas/Oklahoma Smoked brisket, Carolina BBQ, Philly cheesesteaks, and on and on.

theres alot of things attributed to places (specifically to n.y.c.) that have no business with the city:
california pizza
new york steak/n.y.c. cream cheese/... (were there a lot of cows in new york city at one point ?)
new york bagel
french dressing
...

its all marketing. a lot of rock star chefs set up shop in n.y.c and they exaggerate the already great food scene there.
i find new york pizza a little too gourmet for my tastes; just a regular corner store slice for me.

I am not sure about water, but for sure ingredient suppliers. NYC has some great suppliers and the further you get away from there, the less chance of getting a great NYC style pizza. In Pittsburgh we have nothing even close to as good. Our pizza is terrible!

It's the water and the suppliers. I grew up in the tri-state and you cannot beat the pizza in CT/NYC/NJ. My parents retired in SoFl--where MANY tri-staters retire and/or snowbird and every single person I've talked to agrees. There are also numerous articles (google, people) that agree and places that actually import NY water, to get their pizza just right.

Now, that's not to say there are not other TYPES of pizza that are good...but nothing beats tri-state pizza. IMO, nothing beats New Haven pizza (Bar, Modern, Pepe's.)

The reason NYC pizza tastes different, is it is loaded with minerals the rest of us do not want in our drinking water. We live in area with much less contaminated water, and use a water softener and filter system to get rid of the contaminated mineral junk in water. We want clean water, but New Yorkers like mineral junk in their water.

They know how to make other pizza taste like made in New York, just dump some calcium and magnesium into tap water from other places.

New Yorkers like water, contaminated with things people other places buy equipment to take out of their water. Most of us like clean and pure, not water contaminated with minerals.

It may be the sauce and the cheese. There is one pizzeria (slice & delivery) where I live that does a reasonably good version of the pizza I ate as a child and a youth in NJ/NYC. The cheese and the sauce blended together as one, which to me is the key element. No one else here gets it quite as right.

"Here" is Pittsburgh, PA, BTW. The place is called Napoli Pizza. It's on Murray Avenue in Squirrel Hill. I had some two weeks ago, and my mental zip code changed to 070** or 100**.
