I hadn't eaten sauerkraut in years but bought some store packaged kraut and it wasn't too bad. so I plan on eating it more often. Is store bought as good as home made? I must admit the gas buildup was horrendous and relieving it was thunderous to say the least. But that goes along with the food I guess. any ideas on sauerkraut?
Also, what do you eat with it. I think sausage is the usual thing that goes with it.

Sauerkraut should be easier to digest than just plain cabbage, so the "gas buildup" is more likely a result of digesting cruciferous vegetables. The lacto-fermentation process helps break-down the cabbage and introduces helpful bacteria to your digestive system. The lactic acid produced by the fermentation process is also beneficial to the digestive system.

Try making your own sauerkraut, you'll find plenty of info online.

I love a good kimchi, especially the type made with salted shrimp.

BTW - kimchi is also very easy to make.

I like to make my own sauerkraut. It's easy, and I like lacto-fermented kraut better than the vinegary stuff in the store. Pickles I like either way.

We make our own kraut, it's just cabbage & salt. it goes with many meats, pork, or chicken, not just sausage. In the summer I might add a spoonful to a plate of salad. I read a recipe for sauerkraut soup, but have not made it. I like to add a bit of apple sauce to it when we serve it.

My family has been making our own kraut for generations but I sometimes buy it. We eat it with roast pork and pork chops. Goes well with sausage and frankfurters too.

If you do buy kraut look for the kind sealed in a bag and refrigerated. The kraut in a tin can is bad and metallic tasting and the jars aren't much better.

The gas buildup was due to buying vinegar kraut in the store. Home fermented kraut does not have the indigestible complex sugars, thanks to the acidophilus yeast, and does not cause intestinal gas in humans.

I love caraway seeds in mine. I also have discovered this year how much I enjoy kim chee, especially the hot and spicy variety.
It is absolutely wonderful for your digestive system.

I grew up with a dish my Mom used to make with cut up hot dogs in sauerkraut all stirred up in a skillet. Probably the poorer version of sausage and kraut. Good stuff regardless.

I personally love kraut on my hotdogs with a touch of mustard and onions. Great, now I'm gonna have to make those soon.

Husband has it occasionally and we buy it. He has it with polska kielbasa. Or Reubens. It's rare that we have it as the smell makes me very ill.
