..........So what would you rather reach for at the end of a long day?
Interesting question.
As things go, the only time I've had ice cream in the house was when I was recovering from dental surgery. Otherwise, it is one of those decadent items, corn & potato chips being another, I've learned to do without.
Wine on the other hand.....my family ancestry tends to have a large chunk of southern mainland Europe in it, so wine drinking is rather ingrained into me. I don't have any hard liquor in the house anymore, just beer and lots of wine.
The catch is, however, that living out in the country now has really upped the operational tempo so that for many days, the consumption of any alcohol is just out of the question. On many days, the detox clock, that time of "bottle to throttle" is set at 12 hours.
So what do I use to obtain that "fix"? Three things. I might use a soft drink but those, too, are items I have learned to live without and only have them in the house as left overs from group camp outs.
Another item I might use is a fruit punch mixed with tonic water. Tonic water is something I have a taste for, it is what I consume when I'm the designated driver, and combined with punch, gives it that kick that one might find in alcohol.
Finally, I have found that quaffing around a quarter of a gallon of chilled well water has an incredible effect on me. Even if I am not quaffing that amount, it is still pretty fantastic. Thursday, I had time so I had quaffed a small glass of wine. I then had a chaser of a tall glass of well water and then poured another of each to have with my pasta. I consumed the water through the meal, the wine glass never got touched, and I eventually just poured it back into the bottle.
I just remembered my father always poured leftover wine /Schnapps in his dessert bowl, even ice cream and he insisted it was tasty. I tried to pour wine/Schnapps over vanilla or chocolate ice cream and boy was he ever right. Add with the vanilla ice cream infused raisins and roasted almonds and you got a divine dessert
I'll take the ice cream. John has this ice cream monkey on his back and feeds his addiction nearly every day. Unfortunately he's dragging me down with him. Ice cream has a way of hitting that pleasure g-spot in your brain better then a glass of wine. MMMMM Rocky Road or Mint Chocolate Chip. Even better if it's in a waffle cone dipped in chocolate and sprinkles.
I like both - and had both just yesterday. But for that fix that takes the edge off - ice cream (sugar) every time. At work, if I'm especially stressed out, I'll go to my colleague's office for a quick fix - she usually has mini dark chocolate bars for me. The scent alone starts to help me unwind.
Tough choice because I like both. I'll choose the ice cream.
