So, I've never bought in on the scare tactics, just used moderation.
Overweight? Cut back on calories.
I cook meat to kill bacteria.
I wash, peal fruits veggies well.
How do you handle the growing hysteria in your life?
Nowadays having a sizable dinner party is difficult.
No sugar, no meat, mercury in fish. Chicken has to be organic .
Have you cut back on social gathering where food is involved?
There is no food hysteria in my life -- I don't take dietary advice from media headline writers.
Those those do have only themselves to blame. Those that think nutritional studies routinely contradict themselves don't actually read those studies -- they read headlines written by editors, not people with any background in science at all, much less food science. Sadly, they take those headlines at face value. They should know better.
I have cut back on social gatherings with food. My issue isn't hysteria. It's several severe food allergies. If I eat something containing my allergen, I will at least spend several days feeling bad. Sometimes I'll have to go to the emergency room. People don't take it seriously, think I'm being picky or faking it so my dietary preferences are respected. Casual cross contamination, like a shared utensil or dipping a chip, is enough to cause a reaction too. So I don't eat food I haven't prepared myself. I also don't invite people over for meals anymore because my ingredients are expensive and cooking is ten times the work it was before my allergies showed up.
The "hysteria" doesn't affect me at all - I ignore it completely. I don't really entertain anymore - well if it's stuff like appetizers and drinks, yes - I do what I've always done. If someone doesn't like it, don't eat it. Pretty simple, really. But I don't do big meals (like holiday meals) anymore. I physically can't do it. Heck, dinner for the two of us can be a real challenge physically on some days for me.
I am hysteria free, and can't imagine cutting back on social activities due to food.
I've been around long enough to take the current fashionable science with a grain of salt. I may "tweak" my eating habits but that's about it.

That's pretty much it.

Not going to happen. I love food and people. When hosting a large group, I'll always have some gluten-free and vegetarian options available. As well as low-carb, because that's how I eat. If I make something that contains nuts, I'll label it as such. If a guest is on a very restrictive diet, I would hope they would inquire about the menu in advance and maybe offer to bring a dish that meets their requirements.
Also hysteria free! I do not worry about what I'm serving if I'm hosting a party. If my guests don't like it then they don't need to eat what I'm serving. All in moderation. I also don't worry about what's organic and what's not.
Overall, just use common sense. Eating a healthy diet isn't complicated. Unfortunately the conflicting information that we're constantly bombarded with makes a very simple thing appear confusing.
