Ooh! I had that happen 10-11 years ago! It was terrifying!

My husband was out of town and I'd invited a good friend and her 3 year old daughter over to have dinner with me and my 3 year old. I also had an infant who was not yet eating solid food. I don't remember what I was cooking, in our tiny kitchen in our tiny condo, but I pulled it out of the oven and placed it on the counter (on a kitchen towel) and I turned back to close the oven, it EXPLODED! Exploded into thousands of tiny pieces all over the place! It was so scary! Pieces hit me, but didn't cause damage. My kids were just out of range of flying shards of glass. Shaking and panicked I called my friend. She suggested we order pizza at her house, and afterwards she'd keep my kids for a bit so I could go home and clean up. I miss that sweet friend (we've both moved all over the country since then and lost touch )

Sounds terrifying and dangerous.


When I put cold ingredients into Pyrex that's headed for the oven I gently warm it in the microwave on defrost for a few minutes just in case. But I had never heard of a hot dish exploding as it cooled at the table.


I just had a thought. I'll bet the company never calls this "exploding." They probably call it a "liberation of components."

Pyrex acknowledged this a while back.

I don't remember if they said that most of the problems resulted from going to cold to hot or hot to cold, too quickly...either way...

I'll start looking for vintage Pyrex at the swap meets...thanks for the tip, NK.

I had those brown glass saucepans. they all broke. I still use pyrex for baking.

This happened to my neighbor. She took a casserole or whatever out of the oven, and placed it on a hot pad on the counter to cool. Didn't touch it. Five minutes later, it exploded.

They really should go back to the old glass.

I had one explode into pieces also. I no longer use clear Pyrex for oven baking since this occurred. I still use the white CorningWare glass bakeware because it doesn't explode like the newer clear glass does.

Because of personal stories (2) I heard about...bad hand cuts, needing therapy after
healing...I would never have it in my house.
Some say it has to do with heat to cold...well, we are talking about simply taking
it out of the oven with a pot holder...no cold water hitting it.
I don't need to have it not happen to me to get it out of my house.
Thank you very much...not worth it when you can buy something metal! My opinion.

Do you mean Visions by Corningware? I had several of those, sold them on my yard sale back in the early 2000s. The lady who bought them was so thrilled, she paid me around $30 for them.
