Surprisingly, my favorite fries are Ore-ida shoestrings that I deep-fry myself in peanut oil. They taste EXACTLY like the ones my dad made when I was a kid, only he did it the hard way, hand cutting fresh potatoes, and double-frying them.
These days I limit my fries-eating, but when I want them I go for Ore-Ida!
I believe that people think that they like fresh cut fries better.
Fresh cut fries are great when they are cooked correctly, but there are soooo many places that serve floppy, disgusting, oil-soaked fresh cut fries; it ruins it for the folks that actually know how to do it right.

I voted for fresh cut ones, but I agree that the frozen ones do taste good if they are deep fried. I never did like frozen fries baked in the oven.
I like the crisp texture you get with fries that were frozen first. I can't stand those limp soggy fries at In-n-Out. I've tried ordering them well-done and they were better but still not worth the calories like a great order of fries is.

Fresh cut ones, I'll either bake or deep fry.
Right. These same fries taste terrible baked in the oven. I bought a little junior-size fryer called fry-baby which doesn't use a whole lot of oil, plus you can use the oil several times if you keep it clean of debris. And you really do need peanut oil for best flavor. These have really spoiled me for any other fries, there are very few restaurants that serve fries I like these days.
