We used to get really nice sweet corn from a truck by the side of the road, but haven't seen them for a couple of years. Otherwise it's too expensive in the grocery stores, it generally runs about $6 for five ears or so. Guess I'll have to plant some.

I think we had a thread on this before, and maybe someone even posted a picture, but some stores provide bins for people to shuck the corn in the stores!

There is absolutely nothing better than sweet corn on the cob during the summer. I remember it best from going out and picking it from my grandparents garden!

So OP you are ok with putting back the ears of corn you tested by popping a kernal with your fingernail for others to buy? To me that is rude and gross. Corn is so cheap that's maybe why Safeway shoppers don't care.

I find that very unappealing. I simply buy the five ears of corn for a buck and hope for the best.

Yeah, fingernail corn.

I don't poke at corn in the store.

Sometimes I fold a leaf back just a bit at the very end. If I see corn and not rot I'm good. I'm not concerned about getting a bad one or two when they're 6 or 8 ears for a buck.

One ear will make a can of corn.

Locally, most stores will remove most of the husks and wrap the ears in packages of five to prevent a lot of the mess that some people cause. You set a good look at the corn without the produce section becoming a mess.

"shucking ".?

I guess city slickers call it "shucking" and farmers call it " husking"

Both are acceptable.

Local usage. Western PA is shucking for sweet corn and husking for field corn. MD is peeling for sweet corn.
