My snack, circa 1950 was bread, butter and sugar. Pure, natural, and good.
I make a crazy-good snack with those three ingredients plus cinnamon.
Butter several slices of bread on one side (preferably top ),
Place the bread slices on a cookie sheet (butter side up),
Sprinkle the slices very generously with cinnamon sugar,
Place under broiler until the sugar melts and bubbles (don't let it burn).
The top is crispy, and the bottom is soft and steamy.
The first time my child's friends taste that treat they always exclaim "Wow!! What's that called?"
My mom used to make homemade bread. It smelled so good rising and then baking. And tasted so good eating it warm from the oven with real butter. Store bread just can't compare to that.

In Mexico, they like white flour tortillas with butter, sometimes jam. White tortillas are about 4x as expensive as corn tortillas, but I liked the corn better. They always felt they were offering me a treat with the flour ones, and they fed the leftover corn tortillas to their dog!

Cinnamon toast...Yum.
My mother used to make this for us when we were kids, and I've eaten it as an adult too.
Absolutely love slices of good crusty french baguettes with real butter...chewy and good.
