A California restaurant is defending its practices after customers reacted angrily to finding out the eatery re-serves Popeyes chicken in two dishes.

The controversy at Sweet Dixie Kitchen in Long Beach began when customer Tyler H. posted a review on Yelp that accused the eatery of re-serving fast food from Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen.

I don't see the big deal. If it was cheap Sysco chicken, no one would care. But because it's from Popeyes, it's suddenly a big deal?

The restaurant is located in a historic building, fryers are not allowed in the kitchen. Since the food is southern inspired, customers were requesting that fried chicken be added to the menu. Instead of ignoring those requests, the owner decided to source the fried chicken from elsewhere (since again, she wasn't able to fry the chicken at the restaurant). Now she could have just bought bulk chicken tenders from Sysco for 5 cents each, but instead she wanted something that was better quality. She never claimed it as her own home cooked chicken, or tried to keep it a secret. The person who wrote the Yelp review even states that he was told exactly where the chicken came from.

The restaurant Is not a Southern fried chicken restaurant, or even claim the fried chicken as a specialty. 2 menu items, out of about 2 dozen have chicken. And that's only because customers requested it. Otherwise the chicken would have never been on the menu.

I don't see the big deal either

I am sure paying retail price for the chicken affected their profit margin on those menu items greatly

The problem is, if you want to serve Popeyes - own it, claim it and put it on the menu. She was shady. They were hiding the fact it was Popeyes (badly reheated too) and then got annoyed they got called out for it.

How were they hiding anything? The original Yelp reviewer was told where the chicken was from, as were the two guys in the "article" you linked. It even says on the menu that the chicken is from elsewhere. The owner was not trying to pass it off as her own homemade fried chicken, so I don't see how she was being shady.

The rest of the menu say so and so from Joe Bob's farm. The thing she wasn't tranparent about was the chicken. And for someone who takes pride in sourcing - Popeye's is pretty crappy.

And they weren't hiding where the chicken was from. Most restaurants rely on tons of food service frozen foods, sauces, soups, etc. I worked at a restaurant for years where we sold chicken wings and burgers that were cooked from fresh (well, previously frozen) chicken wings and ground beef and fries and all of the apps like mozzarella sticks, jalapeno poppers etc were frozen food that was just dropped in the fryer before serving. That's the reality of 90% of restaurant food in the country and nobody puts on the menu that things are frozen or that their special sauce was poured out of a plastic bag

No it doesn't say anything about where the other ingredients are from. You can go on Yelp and see pictures of the menu. It basically looks the same as the one on their website.

Its not like other restaurant are plastering all over their menu that their food items are from Sysco, so I dont see why suddenly this one restaurant needs to be 100% transparent on where each and every ingredient comes from. Anyone who asked was told it was from Popeye's, which I think is good enough.
