We have ONE Chinese restaurant that features this dish, which I have never even noticed anywhere else. It's a Szechuan place a few miles from here. There are some recipes online but I was just wondering if this is a favorite in other locales. I love the stuff!
It sounds great, but the closest thing I've had to it is Steak au poivre. I haven't seen it on a Chinese restaurant menu around here because all we have are Chinese buffets and Chinese take-out restaurants.

My favorite local Chinese restaurant -- the one that makes the best mapo tofu that I've ever tasted -- has "Beef in black pepper sauce" on the menu. (Yes, I just looked.) I'll be getting that next time.

That was one of our dinner choices at our wedding reception
OP, I haven't seen it on the local restaurant menus. If I go into NYC I may find it but even when I worked in an Asian neighborhood, I never saw it on the menus. I think it's a regional dish, which is probably why I haven't heard of it. Locally, we have a lot of Cantonese and Szechuan. I just looked up this dish and it looks like it's a local dish of Guangdong (southeast China). Maybe it depends on where the restaurant owners are from? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The closest thing that tastes like what you've described around here is "hot and spicy beef," which you can get off the to-go menu at a take-out place. You can order it *with* Chinese vegetables, if you want to. (This place also has a "diet" menu, so go figure.)
