Wax on Avocados (garden, cheap, purchase, natural)

This week I purchased a batch of avocados and, by golly, after I washed one, and started to slice it in half, it was so slippery I could hardly slice it. I live in Arizona and am close to the growing areas of California and/or Mexico. Maybe I got a really fresh batch because of my location. But this is the first first time I ever had one so slippery I could hardly hold onto it. Has this happened to anyone else?

Some avocados have very slick skin, depending on the variety. They have a natural wax that coats the skin. Do you know what kind this one was?

I think it was a Hass avocado; it was an ordinary cheap avocado. It cost me 50 cents.

I've never heard of avocados being waxed. That would inhibit ripening, as they only ripen after being picked.

My gosh, you're lucky! I've never had an avocado cost me less than $1.50 -- and that $1.50 is a bargain!

Was your slippery one bright green or already dark, almost black?

If it was a Hass, and it was ripe, it was dark. Avocados that are green when ripe are some other variety (Reed? Fuerte?). But something like 90 or 95% of supermarket avocados are Hass, because they have a reliably long season.

Avocados are cheaper if you live close to where they grow. If you're extra lucky and have friends with avocado trees, like me, you can get them free.

The avocado was fairly dark and ripe. I had another one from that batch and it, too, was quite slippery to hold. I did Google avocados and wax and there were many listings on the subject and it looks like a common practice.

How I wish we could grow an avocado tree in our back yard!Our climate is just too hot in the summer. Out here, I actually saw them priced at 3 for $1.00 last week, but they were not the large, premium kind. It is because they don't have to ship them as far, I think.

We can get 6-8 avocados for a $1 depending on the date.

On the other hand, try finding a decent bagel in this area.

6-8 for a dollar? That's insane!!! I was just at the store. They're $1.99 EACH today. Sigh...

I've got great bagels, though. We should have a barter system in place.

I bought some avocadoes today for 66 cents each from a local farm market, although they are imports to BC from Mexico, not local greenhouse grown. The further away you are from their source the more they cost due to shipping costs.
