Because smart restaurateurs know how to maximize profits at each table by occupying the youngsters and making the parents happy. The really smart restaurateurs cover the table with butcher paper and provide crayons even if there aren't any children at the table.

It's a restaurant, not a day care center. The purpose is to sell food and beverages. If the parents can't entertain their own kids they need to be responsible for the toys or at least not have the expectation that someone else will.

Then why so many TVs in all the sports bars / restaurants ??
Aren't those TVs there to 'entertain' the adult customers ?
Just the same as the crayons and paper table coverings are there to entertain the little ones.

If putting out crayons saves at least one customer from getting squirt with ketchup then it's well worth it!
To the waitress who responded that the question has been answered, what would happen if I asked the hostess not to be seated next to a table with kids? In my experience that lasts right up until the next family with kids shows up and without fail they are seated right next to me.
Now I've got nothing against kids in restaurants. Depends on the kids though. Parents today are not doing a good job of controlling their children's behavior. Maybe part of my issue with the misbehaved children in any public venue is that in my family any misbehaving in public resulted in a punishment. Usually getting up and leaving. After a few embarrassing strolls out of the place we got the point. Otherwise you get kids squirting ketchup on other people and the not too surprising response from the parent:" Relax. It's just ketchup!". I would have picked up a ketchup bottle and squirt him with it! Dumb ba*&%*%ard!

The expectation is what was questioned. I've heard many more than one person with kids asking for crayons or toys with the expectation that a food business should have them. Adults don't expect restaurants to supply telephones, laptops and reading material - they bring with them the supplies they plan on using while they eat.
I have a hard time understanding someone who will make a dining decision based on availability of art supplies. If they're so important bring them along from home.
Kids' food is not a profit center for restaurants and kids don't buy beer, wine and liquor, the area where real profits are made.

Another failure in the way some people bring up their kids. Any decent parent will show the kid how to make squirt designs on the tablecloth, not the other patrons.
