This past week, my favorite was the 15 Bean soup I made yesterday. It was so good with hot ciabatta bread and butter. I used the recipe on the bag without the flavor packet.

This week my favorite was pretty simple. I saw a picture of a Reuben that someone was complaining they spent $12 on at a deli and received a rather pathetic specimen. Cruddy looking marble rye, very little meat, unexciting blob of sauerkraut, a bit of gooey looking Thousand Island Dressing.

So I decided to one up every ingredient:

Used my own rye bread, a fairly hydrated dough so it was more pourous than normal rye.

I spread mayonnaise on the rye bread slices and grilled them mayo-side down until golden brown and with thick slices of Jarlsberg melted on top.

Then laid several folded layers of thick sliced corned beef from the deli (I couldn't find proper corned beef to cook myself as it is considered a seasonal food in these parts).

Used an off-the-shelf saurkraut that I drained, rinsed, and cooked with Chardonnay, caraway, and juniper berries, then cooled.

Finally, some homemade Thousand Island dressing.

It came out really well if not totally traditional with the Jarlsberg and different style rye bread. I'd have been more than satisfied if I had paid $12 for that sandwich.
