I check and see if it at least looks right. I mean, I can't go through every wrapper and make sure they're all burgers or whatever. Although, it will be easy to spot if they got it completely wrong such as the wrong quantity of food or give me someone's yogurt parfait when I didn't order one. It's faster than leaving the drive thru and getting disappointed later or leaving the drive thru and realize you have the wrong order or a missing item.
Don't feel bad for people making minimum wage - they're getting experience with it, they may even have some benefits they can use, and it's a paying job, which a lot of people these days do not have so check the bag. It is their job to give you your correct order.

I never do the drive thru - always order in and take out. It's almost always have a very simple 1 person order so unlikely it gets messed up. But it has happened enough to make we want to check.
I will check the contents not at the cash register when recieved ( thats kinda in your face to the employee ) But rather I will check the contents quickly at the condiment station where I will grab a few extra napkins or something.
If anything needs corrected, its a cinch to walk right back up to the person who just handed you the order.
Rarely is something wrong or missing, my biggest complaint is corporates little trick of placing a medium size amount of fries into the large fry container ( after charging me for a large fries order ) I will always go back up and politely request ketchup and then ask for a large fries as mine is only 1/2 full.

I was a much more regular customers in years past - these days not so much.... but I have been given just as many 1/2 full large fries containers as completely full. Its pretty much a coin toss. And I always get the problem instantly remedied by politely bringing it to their attention.
The only way to get the correct order at these places is to go inside and order to go. Then you can check your order before you get down the road.
Why would you not check your drive thru order before leaving as well? I typically pull forward a little bit so the person behind me can get to the window, and then do a quick check of the food. Mist of the time its right, but if its not, I then go inside and have them correct the order.
