Just heard on the news about cantalopes from Honduras causing a salmonella outbreak (over 50 sick) - they said if you have cantalopes-to throw them away.

I have had cantaloupes to slice and use in my juicer. The last time was a few days ago. I'm still here to tell you about it.
Normally, I wash all fruits before using them. I'm paranoid simply because when you buy something at the grocery store, you never know when something might have been accidentally dropped on the floor. You also never know where anything has been when you do make a purchase. As for salmonella, I didn't know that that was happening and I somehow have not heard anything on the news. It's probably just down there that this thing is happening.
I am waiting until the ones grown locally are ripe! I'm thinking the local farmers market. You just don't know what kinds of fertilizers and insecticides are used when fruits and veggies come from other countries!! I have heard some horror stories!! Thanks Lasey for the information!
I used to work in the food industry and Salmonella has always been a problem with cantaloupes. The reason it is susceptible is because animals do defecate in the fields and the outer skin of the cantaloupe is pitted where feces can be trapped unlike other melons that have a smooth skin. Wash the cantoulpe thoroughly before cutting and after removing the skin wash your knife, hands and cutting board again before chopping it up. Usually this should take care of the problem.

Better safe than sorry.
That's good to know, especially here in Texas. I bought one last week and have already eaten it . I WILL be looking at those little stickers on them fron now on.
They were just on sale here and I'm glad they "repeat" on me so I didn't buy any I scrub all my fruit with a vegetable brush. I'm wondering if the fruit/veggie wash works.

This is an old thread and we usually don't close threads because of age; however, since this is an OLD food scare I am going to close. Thanks for your understanding.
