And, if I am going to dine alone, I tend to prefer a quiet place over one that is full of loud groups, etc. Probably because when I dine alone, I usually read.
The only time it could be a little uncomfortable eating out is on weekends when entire families sit down at the tables. Otherwise....everybody needs to eat whether you are alone or hitched with somebody.
I don't eat out alone very often. I find it depressing and as a widow of 3 years, I don't need any more reasons to be depressed. Plus, I am not a big fan of restaurant food as I like to cook and enjoy my own cooking. I don't even mind clearing the table and doing my own dishes!! And I know what I am eating and how it has been handled.
I do go out to eat with my sister sometimes, she likes to. My closest friend has all kinds of food allergies, so that's a no go.
Before i got married, I ate alone, in restaurants, many times, no biggie. Try it, & enjoy your meal.
I used to do it also but eventually I stopped eating out as I iddnt like the blandness in everything...... There still are a few restaurants I goto....... This fish fry place makes a delicious mac and cheese (Lobster sauce) and another fish place makes a yummy phili! (Steak sandwich)... But mostly I eat home now.........
I think this is a question from a female and non-professional perspective, as most working/ traveling/ hungry males grab meals out without a second thought, sensitivity, anxiety, or question .

I'm a female and eat out alone in non-professional capacities. Traveling or not, working or not ... Do it all the time without a second thought.
I pull out my iPad mini and read. Maybe that's why I don't give a poop what other think. I'm too busy reading to care.
The only thing that bothers me when I'm dining alone is waitstaff who don't realize that if I'm reading, I clearly don't want to chat with them.
