I had to buy a small bottle of 1000 Island. I know they are somewhat similar, so can anyone tell me how to redeem this stuff? It sounds like adding a horseradish and a touch of hot sauce would be a good place to start. It does not have huge chunks of pickle or anything, it's just sweeter than I want it to be.

Add some lemon juice and salt. Also, a restaurant I go to makes their own, into which they push hard-boiled egg yolks through a strainer or food mill. I don't usually like HBEs, but this adds an interesting texture. I don't think it's supposed to be hot, but hey, why not?

The Russian dressing I used to buy was similar to Catalina or French dressing, with celery seeds added to it.

Not that I look for it but I haven't seen Russian dressing in years.

Russian dressing fell out of favor when Thousand Island came along. However, some restaurants still put Russian dressing on their reuben sandwiches.

I LOVE Russian dressing. The only company I found that still makes it is Ken's.
It is fairly easy to make. If you look it up there are plenty of recipes.
I think it is a must on Ruebens. I also use it on cheese sandwiches. Did I mention I love it?

I thought they put 1000 Island on Ruebens? You learn something new every day!

I've looked it up recently, and Kraft Russian dressing, which I loved as a kid, is now available in Canada, but not the U.S.

I think some places do. It's a bit sweet for my taste. My housemate will probably like it. I may try making a bit of homemade Russian for my own sandwiches.

I downloaded two recipes for Russian Dressing last night ... one had six ingredients, the other eight, It looked pretty easy to make.

These days, you are seeing a lot fewer varieties of salad dressings as so much of the variety brands have been converted to low-fat and no-fat. Many of the regional brands are gone
