Or "Meals Ready to Eat." You know, that military food handed out to soldiers in drab olive packaging. I would think these would be ideal for camping and RVing or even for people living off the grid (many come with a mini propane heater). Anyone eat/like them?

Yeah, some are good, some are okay, and others aren't good at all. They don't really have the shelf life most people think they do, so you have to check the dates.

BTW - I've never seen an MRE that came with a propane heater. Are you sure you aren't talking about the flameless heater packs.

That must be it? I've never used one, myself; only heard about them.

Checking Amazon now...

They are really expensive for what they are. 18 years ago my favorite was the cheese tortellini.

Never tried MRE’s, but I’ve ate a lot of C Rations and the MREs have got to be better.

Some are good and some are bad. If I was hiking and camping (having to carry everything) they would be my first choice, but not for anything else (besides emergency food).

Yes, use them camping all the time. There are many brands and varieties these days and some are actually very good (at least as good as any other prepared canned/frozen meals). As mentioned the shelf life isn't indefinite so for prepping purposes I think freeze dried meals are better because they will last forever. Of course you need water to reconstitute and if there is any kind of serious world changing events it won't be a given that you'll have a big supply of water to reconstitute freeze dried stuff ...but if there isn't enough water for that then you'll probably be dead soon anyway no matter how much prepping you do

They are pricy, don't last forever, and they contain enough calories for a whole day of marching under a full pack, arms and ammo.

Some are tasty, though I haven't had one in over 10 years so can't recommend which, but Chili Mac was always a favorite.

Chili Mac ruled..I am still trying to emulate that taste exactly in my kitchen today...I've come close...sooooo close. :-)

Anyone remember the nasty C-Rats?

worst of the worst was Ham and Lima beans...'Ham and Mofos'
Second worst IMO, was Hot Dogs and beans..'Beans n' Baby Dicks'

sometimes the meat was cut up Hot dogs..other times cut Vienna Sausage.
I would like the little vinegary taste of the Vienna sausage..reminded me of Hawai'i.

I Love these guys at Food Assets ! Some of the best in the preparedness industry. Extremely knowledgeable, honest, no fear tactics used. If you haven't checked out their site, you owe it to yourself to do so. Peace Out!

Why do we NOT recommend MRE's?
