I'm going to make beef stew in my Instant Pot today. I found a recipe that adds a star of anise to the stew, which the recipe says is option, but I thought I would try it and bought some anise. The checker in the grocery store asked what I was going to make with the anise. I told her beef stew...and she didn't really comment. Then I googled it and wondered if it is a Mediterranean flavor. If it is, DH won't like it. Now I'm afraid to add the anise. And it says to add a whole star, so I don't want a big pot of stew that won't get eaten!

It's sort of a licorice flavor, but when added to something like stew with lots of layered flavors, it really just imparts depth of flavor. Your stew won't taste like a big bag of licorice.

It's Asian, not Mediterranean.

Yes it's licorice tasting and Asian. It is one of the spices typically in a 5 spiced powder.

When I first had pho, I didn't know what the flavor was that I was detecting. It was star anise (in a good way and I don't particularly care for licorice)

Pretty much.

I actually throw a few in my pots of curry (I make my own curry powders/mixes from scratch) and it adds a unique and delicious flavor.

As mentioned it is Asian and is a little like cloves IMO in that a little goes a long way. I personally would not use a whole star in a beef stew. Maybe with lamb or pork.

I keep star anise on hand for Asian recipes, and -- yes in pho always.

It sounds like you have purchased ground anise, not star anise. If I''m correct, I would add just a pinch of the ground or leave it out entirely.

No, I bought star anise. I am going to leave it out this time and experiment with using it when I'm not serving other people who may not like it.

Thanks for all the comments. I opened it up and yep - it smells just like licorice. I look forward to trying it, just not in this recipe!

I use it in Indian and Moroccan dishes, along with lots of other aromatic spices.

If it's in the recipe, it probably tastes good and nothing like licorice. I put cloves in chicken soup and remove them before serving and no one ever mentions them because the flavor belongs.
