I noticed that, too, about the Tomato soup; in fact, it does have a ton of sugar in it. Doesn't seem it used to taste that way, though? The Tomato with Rice cuts the sweetness a little.
Well, the Tomato Bisque did. I used to like their tomato soup, especially teamed with a grilled cheese. But I don’t like it any more. I will eat Panera’s tomato soup.
I haven’t found any packaged soups that have reasonable amounts of sodium, but still taste good. IMO, if you have to add a ton of sugar and/or salt for the soup to have flavor, the ingredients must be sub par.
Does anyone have a great recipe for homemade tomato soup?

My wife makes a wonderful Creamy Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato soup. You can do a web search to find a recipe that suits your preference for ingredients.

I've never made either of these -- I'm not a huge fan of tomato soup -- but I've made a bunch of things from Smitten Kitchen. I trust Deb. You can click on "I MADE THIS!" in the Comments section to see what people have said.
Haven't noticed a change, but I use it more infrequently than 10 years ago--maybe every 2 or 3 months I use Cream of Mushroom. I use the Cream of Celery even less often. A couple of times a year I make Tuna Casserole with the Cheese soup and Cream of Mushroom.

Tomato based Campbell's soups changed flavor when they built a new plant in Ohio & tore down the old plant in Camden. They used to contract with farmers in South Jersey to grow the tomatoes. They now get the tomatoes from farmers in Ohio.
Progresso soups are canned in Vineland which is also in South Jersey.

There's nothin' better than a Jersey tomato.
