Cheap canned tuna looks like watery cat food. Almost no chunks, just a mystery goo.

Cheap tuna is awful, yes.

Some like tuna with olive oil because that is what they are used to. Others prefer tuna in mayo because that is what they are used to. No one will force anyone to eat tuna in mayo. No one is harmed because someone else prefers tuna in mayo.

On the bright side, the thread offered another opportunity to bash Americans for something pointless.

The Kirkland solid white tuna (Costco brand) in water is very good. I don't know what has happened to StarKist solid white but its so mushy and yucky looking now.

I also give a thumbs up for the Wild Planet tuna in water (Costco also carried this off and on, but it seems they switched to olive oil). I like Wild Planet because they have no salt added tuna now (I see Starkist does as well).

I prefer in water because I am usually mixing the tuna in with something else (salad, etc), so it would end up being too oily or detract from what I am making.

Oil preferences are a whole other discussion. I love olive oil, and use it for most things, but you can't do a stir-fry with it. The smoke point is too low.

When I lived in Spain I was introduced to tuna packed in good olive oil. It is OMG good! Often served on crackers with lemon juice, and garlic.

Wild Planet does not offer tuna packed in water. Each variety is cooked in the can, with either EVOO--or nothing. It says right on the can, too, that no water has been added.

I generally get the EVOO and prefer that, but the plain is good, too, and that's why--no water to dilute the flavor.

Yup, I made that mistake and won't make it again. I ended up cooking it lightly with olive oil and garlic and used that as a sauce for linguine. That was actually pretty good after I had to fix it, LOL.
