Now that we travel a bit, and eat out more often, I find myself leaving reviews of the establishments we visit. I normally review restaurants on Yelp, and hotels/casinos/attractions on Trip Advisor although they seem quite interchangeable.
When we find something we like, we’d like to spread the word where it counts.
So... restaurant owners and workers, what site do you rely on?
I'm not a restaurant owner or worker, but I kind of feel like Yelp has more honest reviews than Tripadvisor. I used to be a big Tripadvisor fan but I noticed that reviews of everything were always better there than on Yelp. I just want the truth about wherever I'm going to eat or sleep. I don't it sugarcoated!

Yelp is absolutely infuriating. It gives morons behind a keyboard with anonymity the power to tear down a business, even though the consumer is often wrong, ignorant, mistaken, or flat out stupid. My wife has worked part-time at a restaurant for a while, and just recently someone left a nasty 1-star Yelp review claiming that the restaurant she works at 'sent the wrong order', 'refused to give a refund', and that the person at the restaurant on the phone 'hung up on her' after sounding annoyed.
This idiot's review on Yelp hides many of the details of the story. The customer was first whining that the dish they ordered didn't have any ginger and wanted a refund, which is literally impossible, because the sauces are made in batches and contain tons of ginger that are cut finely (so you might not see it in whole pieces in the dish after it is cooked, maybe the customer expected to see whole pieces?). The customer WAS ALSO THE ONE WHO HUNG UP, not the restaurant personnel. If you've already eaten half the dish and are mistaken about the ingredients in a dish, how can a restaurant give you a refund? I've also seen one star reviews written for my wife's restaurant because moronic customers claimed there were pork chunks in their dish when that is also flat out impossible because there is not pork in the recipe! They mistook pieces of tofu for pork yet slammed the restaurant for it.
Many people on Yelp are dumb. Yelp allows those same people to broadcast their voices, which can severely damage a business' reputation that will affect the bottom line even though the customer is 100% wrong or obnoxious. If you want to slam a business then do it without the anonymity. Only cowards hide behind fake names and anonymous screen names in order to be able to trash a business even though the persons writing the reviews may be difficult customers or morons who simply can't be pleased with any level of service.
Most of my restaurant owning friends do NOT like Yelp. It is NOT due to an occasional negative comment. Rather, over the years, they have felt coerced to advertise on Yelp in order that they keep getting on Yelp. Also, some frequent Yelp posters have gone into restaurants trying to get a free meal or a discount or a good Yelp review.
As for me, the only real benefit that I get from Yelp is that most of the time, they do post the times when the restaurants are open and they do have a decent map.
I review restaurants on TripAdvisor, but not Yelp. I get bad vibes from Yelp...too many illiterate and insulting reviews there.
Nor would I use anything but TripAdvisor if I’m traveling and want a recommendation.
completely agree: Yelp's is full of negative opinions and I often wonder if it isn't actually a set up. We had a very bad review on our favorite market here in town. It was the only negative or one of the few ever posted and it was on Yelp. I also remember a few years ago, a new restaurant owner coming on CD to let us know there had been a negative review about his new restaurant on Yelp, but at the time, the restaurant hadn't even opened.

Well I am not sure about the honesty of Yelp. I have, personally depended on TripAdvisor for years and seen plenty of mixed reviews.
As a fourth generation restaurant owner/operator, we hate all review sites. People for the most part are morons when it comes to reviewing a restaurant and we feel like we are being held hostage by ignorant guests.
The worst are the guests that throw it up in our face.
i usually go to trip advisor to get a general overview of a restaurant, i also will write reviews of my experiences.
