I never heard of the one they claim is far superior, Green Mountain Gringo salsa.
The 3 worst ratings went to Herdez, Trader Joe’s Salsa Autentica, and On the Border.
The one I get at Safeway, Newman's Own, only came it at 8th place and I like it a lot.
The WashPost is a pay site, but IIRC you may see a certain number of articles free each month. IMO it's the best $9.99 I spend each month.
Huh! I like Herdez. I use it in my chili. I also find Green Mountain overdone, too fussy if that makes sense. Chi Chi's is a good middle of the road salsa too.
I haven't found many that I really love. In fact I splurged not too long ago on one that was sold or is sold at Fresh Market. It wasn't even that great. Now, in all fairness we make several jars in the summer so I think my idea of best is not always what everyone else's might be. The only reason I bought one was because I thought I had used all mine from last summer, but I just found 2 more jars hiding from me in the back of the pantry.
Hey y'all, looking for the best (medium, NOT HOT) salsa in a jar. I currently use Arriba brand but it's just OK.

No, I haven't tried or heard of any of them. My favorite salsa is Emerald Valley, and Garden of Eatin blue corn chips.
Personally, I don't like any of the salsas where the tomatoes have been cooked. I make salsa fresh when we need it. The problem is that it is difficult to buy good tomatoes.
My solution to that is to switch to cabbage salsa whenever I can't get tomatoes. I use the same recipe, substituting chopped cabbage for the tomatoes, and it gets gobbled up.
It's not a big chore and I consider it well worth the small effort to have a fresh salsa with superior flavor.
I do like the Herdez guacamole salsa, which tastes nothing like guacamole and I don't consider it a salsa. It's more of a taco sauce. But it has nice flavor and goes especially well with fresh tomato and sour cream on your tacos.

It is definitely a salsa. In fact in much of Mexico where it is seemingly more common, at least in restaurants and street food booths, than guacamole en molcajete (the familiar chunky guacamole), it is called salsa de aguacate, and unlike regular guacamole, has a significant amount of pureed tomatillo and/or lime juice in it. Something acidic, anyway. I have also heard it called guacamole taqueria.
But you are right, it is chiefly used on tacos, tortas, empanadas, and so on.
I like Pace. I add a dash of cayenne and a pinch of sugar. But the best I've had is from a Dallas restaurant - El Fenix. We've got friends who ship it to us sometimes.
