I wouldn't have thrown out anything after twelve hours. I've forgotten to put milk back into the refrigerator, leaving it out all night. I just refrigerate it again. It will, however, often go sour after a few more days.

Eggs, particularly, you can test- if they don't float in water, they are OK.


I have found that eggs will keep over a month in the fridge, so 12 hours you should still be OK.


I wouldn't eat them raw or nearly raw though. You can certainly boil them if they don't float, and that should be a low-risk way to use them rather than waste them. At least it seems so to me- I am not a professional food safety guy.

I don't have much faith in what the government is telling us, but that's me - you do whatever you feel is right for you.
The government has been telling people what to eat for decades, and sadly, hasn't been very good at it.
Many people don't realize that authorities rely on guesswork to develop these standards - all food safety standards deal in probabilities, and often base their policies on the so-called worst-case scenario.

BTW: tips posted at the govt site are just a guidance, not actual laws, and contain excessive restrictions. Mostly to prevent frivolous lawsuits, Americans love so much. Their recommendation are to use for serving/storing food in public food establishments. At home common sense should prevail.
