It depends on the type of curry, majority of curries are not spicy much. It's only ones that have more chilli peppers infused.

My Indian friend said they add coriander if something is too spicy - but not just a teaspoon - like a tablespoon or more if it is a big pot of lentils, for example. Otherwise you can just server smaller portions of the curry over a LOT of rice to "dilute" it but that's obviously not ideal. Adding (plain) yogurt can also help, especially for creamy dishes.
