My answer to the original question is "yes I guess not", lollol

I don't stick to script anymore --- I'm long since retired, Imdont have to, lol

nobody bakes pies better than my SIL -- she packs them in a huge canning pot to make the 11 hour drive.

I buy a spiral ham but still make a large roaster full of my grandmother's sage stuffing minus those awful giblets.

We make real mashed potatoes and I bought real mashed sweet potatoes from a local BBQ place that are the best I have ever eaten.

There were other side dishes.

Everybody was happy, nobody complained the meal wasn't totally traditional --- probably because real butter was used in everything that needed butter and mine is a family that loves to eat

Our tradition has been to not do the same old every year. At least one dish, usually more, sometimes all, are different.

This year, it was a turkey, because nephew got it free for working at a grocery. We smoked it.

Everything else was different.

We made changes to the menu two years ago and they didn't turn out that well, so we went back to our traditional menu. For some reason, this year's traditional dishes all tasted awesome - better than usual! So I'm happy to keep doing this once a year.

The last few years I've been doing two Thanksgiving dinners.
One at my Brothers house where his wife makes her family's traditional meal.

A few days or a week later I'll prepare a small turkey and smaller amounts of sides for our traditional family meal.

This year my Brother and I had a cheesecake cook off, I baked two of mine with different toppings. (Blueberry and Strawberry)

He baked 3 one was peanut butter chocolate, more pie like. One traditional NY style and one chocolate swirl.
He uses my base recipe but tweaks it a bit and I'm more of a leave it alone it's not broken person.

We realized that except Pumpkin we had no actual pie. No standard apple or cherry.
Nobody complained and it was fun..

My Niece and Nephew like my Cheesecake better so that's all that mattered..
