I'd be going with a challah bread or a challah bread pudding. You can consider purchasing the bread - especially if you're going with the challah bread pudding idea.
The other thing I thought of is noodle kugel (aka noodle pudding). Which can be sweet or savory.
I'm suggesting these for a couple of reasons. They are traditional, widely accepted by everyone, easy to make (especially if you buy the challah), and transport perfectly.

And kudo's to your pastor!
I LOVE the kugel idea! Or the bread pudding. Any good recipes?
He mainly asked me because I'm from NY. Lol. Yes, I EAT and GREW UP with Jewish food - but that does not mean I'm an expert. My first idea was potato pancakes (latkes) but as with all fried food, they are best right out of the pan.
Then I changed my mind and thought of Matzoh ball soup - which I think anyone would like, except that's really a Passover dish. So I thought of doughnuts. But, I need something savory, too.
Thanks and rep to everyone who took the time to reply.
Yes. My pastor is a younger, hipsterish guy who is very interested in other cultures and shaking things up a bit. Which I personally like.
It's not particularly for Hanukkah, but it's an easy side dish to make and then reheat-kasha varnishkes.
Jelly donuts are the defacto Hanukkah donut.
You could take a shot at frying knishes. A bit of work. Again not a specific Hanukhah food but it does involve frying in oil. And it's so very, very New York.
